Selection Committee Announces the Students Joining MediaNumeric in Paris

The MediaNumeric Selection Committee is happy to announce that the twenty students who will be participating in the Data-Driven Journalism, Creative Storytelling and Fact-Checking  training course have been selected. These twenty students come from the three European universities in MediaNumeric’s alliance: two students from Inholland University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands, two students from SWPS University, Poland and the remaining students from the National Audiovisual Institute (INA), France as well as additional students from universities in the Paris region. The on-site, six-day course is set to start on February 21, 2022 in Paris and is hosted by INA.

Students’ Profiels

Students from the MediaNumeric alliance universities in Poland, the Netherlands and France applied for this unique opportunity in order to learn the basics of data journalism and creative storytelling through a set of theoretical and practical courses. Almost fifty students applied to this Erasmus+ course from eleven different universities, ranging from upper year BA to MA students in the fields of journalism, media studies, creative business and the digital humanities. The application process focused on academic, professional and personal motivation to both join and contribute to the MediaNumeric course. The selection committee was impressed with the students’ high-levels of insight into the changing landscape of journalism, data and storytelling and is confident that the selected group of students, offering a mix of different experiences and competencies, will provide for a productive, informative and energised week.

The MediaNumeric Programme

The six-day MediaNumeric training course will cover topics spanning the principles of data and database techniques and tools for multimedia storytelling and media ethics. The course will also look at the growing area of fact-checking and tracking the spread of misinformation around the world. Focused on practical application, workshops are a focus of the week where students will work with professionals who will guide them through the learning process, showing them how data-specific tasks can be approached and supporting the students in investigating a case study where the acquired skills will be put into action. The MediaNumeric training course offers the theoretical know-how, tools and skills needed to take on data-driven journalism, multimedia storytelling and fact-checking, and all of the creative and professional opportunities it offers.

As part of the training course, students will also get the opportunity to visit Agence France-Presse (AFP), the world’s oldest and leading news agency, speaking with professionals engaged in data-driven journalism and storytelling right where they do their work. In connecting with and being taught by a range of internationally-recognised trainers and experts, the students will be provided with numerous networking opportunities and gain a wider understanding of this growing field in practice.
